About the Commissions

These Commissions oversee Australia’s veteran support system and are independent of Government. They play a critical role in administering the legislation that provides benefits and support to Australia’s defence and veteran community. The Commissions also provide advice to both DVA and the Government on the development of policy to ensure veterans and their family’s needs are supported, now and into the future.

The Repatriation Commission grants pensions and benefits, and provides treatment and other services under the Veterans’ Entitlements Act 1986 (VEA) to veterans and members of the Australian Defence Force, their partners, widows, widowers and children. The Commission also provides advice to the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs on related issues.

The Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Commission (MRCC) provides compensation and other benefits for current and former members of the Australian Defence Force who suffer an injury or disease due to service on or after 1 July 2004. It also provides for the dependants of members whose deaths were the result of an injury or disease due to service on or after 1 July 2004.

They directly oversee the granting of pensions, allowances and other benefits – activities carried out by DVA. The Commissions are involved in determining policy, identifying anomalies, considering whether matters should be appealed, advising the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, and the Parliament, liaising with the veteran community, and cooperating with the Department of Defence, Comcare and other government agencies.
