Indigenous Australians have served in almost every conflict and peace operation in which Australia has been involved in since the Boer War.


The Legion of Honour is the highest award given by France for outstanding service to the Republic, regardless of the recipient’s social status or nationality.

At the outbreak of war in August 1914 the Australian Government pledged a force of 20,000 Australian troops, with more to follow.

The Jean and Denise Letaille Museum – Bullecourt 1917 (MUSEE Jean et Denise Letaille – BULLECOURT 1917) focuses on two of the bloodiest battles on the Western Front – the Battles of Bullecourt, fought during the First World War in 1917. While some gains were made, these battles were extremely costly for Australia – 10,000 men were killed, wounded or taken prisoner.

The Australian Remembrance Trail links the Western Front battle sites of most significance to Australians, encompassing existing memorials and cemeteries, while building upon the efforts of local communities to commemorate Australian service.

Anzac Day is our national day of commemoration. 25 April marks the day that the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps landed at Gallipoli in 1915.
