Goilanoi Memorial

Cast bronze panels on supporting posts carrying a brief narrative outlining the experiences and achievements of Australian forces in the area.

In 1945 the Australian Commander, General Thomas Blamey, authorised the erection of 'permanent' battle notices throughout Papua New Guinea. Each of these metal notices, topped by the Australian 'Rising Sun' badge, carried a brief narrative outlining the experiences and achievements of the Australian forces in the particular area in which it was erected. All the bronze panels were cast in the Army Workshops.

These memorials commemorate the achievements of the 18th Australian Infantry Brigade and, in particular, that of Corporal John French on winning the Victoria Cross here on 4 September 1942.

Authorised by General Thomas Blamey. Many have been repositioned to more central locations in Lae and Popendetta by The (then) Battle Exploits Memorials Committee, comprising representatives of PNG, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, RSL, Apex and Rotary Clubs, due to the difficulty of proper maintenance of such widely dispersed memorials.
