Capability review; Department of Veterans' Affairs response
In 2024, DVA welcomed and participated in an independent Capability Review, which was undertaken as part of the wider Australian Public Service Commission (APSC) Capability Review Program.
This meant the department was the subject of an in-depth analysis conducted by 4 senior, independent reviewers who looked at how we operate – our ways of working, processes and tools. The department engaged fully and professionally in the Review, with staff actively participating in interviews and workshops.
The report (which is published on the Australian Public Service Commission website) identified areas where the department is doing well, but more importantly, areas where we can do better across 5 domains: leadership and culture, collaboration, deliver, workforce and enabling functions.
We carefully considered the Review’s findings and recommendations alongside what we have learnt from the Royal Commission and the 2024 APS Census results. In response we have outlined plans to invest in our people, technology, and broader systems. This approach will allow us to achieve our purpose of improving health, wellbeing and economic outcomes for veterans and families, and ensure DVA continues to be a great place to work. We will report on progress in our Annual Report.
Annual Reports, Corporate Plans and Portfolio Budget Statements for all Commonwealth entities and companies are published on the Governments transparency portal website.
Our involvement in the Capability Review program means we are better placed to deliver on Government priorities and outcomes. The plans that have formed our response will guide how we work as a department to build on our strengths and address areas for improvement.
