Overview

The Defence and Veteran Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy 2025-2030 (the Strategy) sets out a joint approach to improving mental health and wellbeing outcomes for the Defence and veteran community to 2030.

The Strategy’s vision is to empower and support the Defence and veteran community for optimal mental health and wellbeing during service or employment, during transition to civilian life and beyond.

The Strategy has six goals:

  1. Promote and assist wellbeing
  2. Improve mental health and wellbeing through prevention and early intervention
  3. Facilitate timely access to quality care and support
  4. Grow a positive and connected Defence and veteran community
  5. Prioritise suicide prevention initiatives
  6. Use evidence and data to drive positive outcomes.

The Strategy was launched on 4 September 2025 by the Hon Matt Keogh MP, Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Minister for Defence Personnel.

The Strategy is underpinned by two interdepartmental action plans one focused on mental health and wellbeing and the other on suicide prevention.

Together these action plans translate the Strategy’s six goals into deliverable actions.

The Strategy complements the Defence and Veteran Family Strategy 2025-2030 and the Veteran Transition Strategy with a shared focus on improving mental health and wellbeing outcomes for the Defence and veteran community.
